For SEOgadget clients, most of the SEO work they receive from me is delivered at the end of a heavily data driven process. If you’re feeling a shift towards data driven SEO too, then the chances are using pivot tables and charts in Excel is a near daily part of your SEO consulting activity.

At some point we all have to up our game, especially with Excel and general analysis skills, so at the SEOmoz Pro Training Seminar late last year, I gave a step by step tutorial on how to make a beautiful chart based on an Excel Pivot Table.

Our friends at Enquisite have just launched a new link building tool to their existing analytics user base called “Linker”. The email we recieved this morning goes a little something like this:

Enquisite Linker combines the proven logic behind an online dating service with the concepts of social networking to streamline your link-building campaigns. Webmasters, marketers, and search marketers interested in improving their web sites’ visibility across the Internet continually express frustration to us of the difficulty around linking strategies. It’s been incredibly hard to find all the relevant web sites and web pages to link to for outbound links; and, it’s incredibly frustrating for business operators to manage the process that is time and labor intensive to acquire inbound links. Enquisite Linker solves these problems in a simple and elegant manner.

Last week was a really, truly exciting week for me and SEOgadget and I just wanted to share some news that I’m personally delighted about. I will be working with SEOmoz as an Associate for the forseeable future. I’m just waiting for my “special badge” to get updated any day now.

Joining was not a difficult decision. The SEOmoz Team are a wildly talented bunch of people who have at some point likely influenced the way you’re doing SEO today. They certainly have in my case and much of the work I do today relies on Linkscape, Open Site Exploer or just general SEO knowledge I’ve picked up from the many blog posts published on their site over the years. I couldn’t imagine a more exciting opportunity in my professional life than being closer to that team, and my friends at Distilled.

In my SES London travel SEO presentation last week, I discussed (in as much detail as you can in 11 minutes) a classic problem that many large scale sites can suffer from, “vertical PageRank siloing“, and how this issue can affect overall site indexation and traffic on your site.

In the session, I explained to the audience at the time that I’m giving simple, practical examples that I hope could easily be translated to any vertical, not just travel.

After attending a few days at SES London it has become clear that there’s a small, but growing interest in the use of Microformats in the SEO community. A few folks asked me where they can learn more on the subject, to which my answer is: read John Allsop’s (Excellent) Microformats: Empowering Your Markup for Web 2.0.

This post looks at a few small Microformats that you might be using already…

chrome os logo

Today’s guest post is courtesy of our friend Jeff Orloff who’s been contributing to SEOgadget regularly over the past few months. If you haven’t read any of his recent posts, try reading “Ubuntu in the Office“, “Understanding Link Injections“,  and “What Google’s Chrome OS Means for the Future of Computing“. On the subject of computing, Jeff’s actually a hardcore Linux / Ubuntu fan. That’s not to say he doesn’t have an interest in all operating systems. Today, he talks us through the steps required to install Google’s Chrome OS in a Virtual Machine on your Windows PC. Why install Chrome OS? As a digital marketer, it might be beneficial to have insight into projects outside of pure SEM that could one day affect the way we work. Take the Nexus One for example. Google are working on projects in many different industries that one day could impact our lives as fundamentally as organic search does today. To that end, it’s probably worth following these instructions and giving Chrome OS a try. Over to you, Jeff!

In July 2009, I used some data extracted from Linkscape to attempt to find patterns in ranking position and general domain / URL trust metrics after the Vince update hit the UK SERPS. Though the analysis couldn’t have taken into account the fact that Google since confirmed they use click through (satisfaction rate) based data in some, higher volume search results, it did show some patterns in ranking position in comparison to relative trust levels using the Linkscape numbers.

There’s been a continuous and very useful flow of writing on the web around the subject of techniques and products using HTML5 and structured data recently.  The use of structured data in front end web design is a favourite subject of mine, an interest that more frequently influences recommendations in our SEO consulting. Recently I discussed the subject with a client and while it may be impractical to rush off and start rebuilding your website in glorious HTML5 today, there are numerous things you can do to improve the markup of your web pages, actions which perhaps will inspire learning and ideas for how the future version of your website should be built.
